Prose and consommé; author Johnny Wideman will read while you eat

Will McGuirk January 28, 2019

The right wine with the right plate, the right beer to pair with the right meat, music at with your merlot, a violinist, a Mariachi band; its all been tried and tested true but a poet with your pot roast, an author with your entree, reading while you dine, now there’s a dish with a difference. Thats the idea on the table for writer Johnny Wideman and his Full Bodied Short Stories project.

Wideman has partnered with Rouge River Brewery and The Smokery for Full Bodied Short Stories: Hopped Edition. The brewery presents three beers, The Smokery pairs three dishes and Johnny adds a fair tale inspired by the fare at hand.

Nineteen on the Park Theatre, in Stouffville, ON, is the location for literary locavores, it take place Saturday Feb 2, 2019. Doors open 7 p.m.

Stews and Brews - Brrrrr-breweries collaborate for winter warm-up feast

Will McGuirk January 22, 2019

Where other businesses compete it seems craft breweries collaborate, building community and capacity equally. Old Flame Brewery located in downtown Port Perry has invited  Manantler Craft Brewing Co., The Second Wedge Brewing Co., Bobcaygeon Brewing Company and Town Brewery to join them for Stews and Brews, a wonderfully timed event featuring craft beer paired with a soup or stew by a restaurant of the brewery’s choosing.

Old Flame spokesperson Kyra Dietsch says they are teaming up with Marwan’s Global Bistro, while Second Wedge from Uxbridge will be joined by the Urban Pantry (Ed’s note: I can totally vouch for them, so good seriously) .

“I believe Marwan will be creating a stew specially for the event,” says Dietch. “Each restaurant and brewery are given full creative license to create whatever they like. The only requirement is that there are two beers per soup/stew: one that complements that flavour of the stew and one that contrasts the flavours.”

Stews and Brews runs noon - 6 p.m. Tickets are $20 which includes 10 tokens and a keepsake bowl. DJ D Money will be on decks.

We will update you as more info comes on the other breweries pairings but in the meantime go get yourself a ticket. This is perfect timing, brrrrrr - beer, borscht, yes please.

UPDATE: Town Brewery is teaming up with The Tap & Tankard for their soup and beer pairing.

Be a sweetie, help the homeless - and there will be cake!

Will McGuirk May 3, 2018

There may be some gingerbread houses available at The Refuge annual fundraiser but they are not the type of houses people generally can survive in. The Refuge in downtown Oshawa helps homeless youth find the kind of home they do need and they need your help to do so so they are offering you cake!

The fourth annual Dinner and Cake Auction take place Saturday May 26 at the Heritage Hall in the Purple Woods Conservation Area in north Oshawa. The hall also hosts an annual Maple Syrup Festival but something even sweeter will be available at this event.

Many of the cakes being auctioned are made by some of the Region's mayors and MPPs, and there will a cake donated by NHL player Bryan Bickell. Oshawa's Regional and City Councillor Dan Carter will host.  Cupcake Junkie Bakery and Cafe, based in Whitby, is donating goodies for the auction. The event is catered by The Refuge’s social enterprise, New Leaf, that trains and employs local youth. All proceeds go supporting The Refuge.

Doors open at 6:00pm with hors d'oeuvres, dinner is at 7:00pm.  The auction occurs after dinner. Order tickets here ->
