Novelty postcard, “How We Do Things At Oshawa, Ont.”, c. 1920s, Oshawa Public Libraries
At a time when Photoshop apps are available to anyone with a smartphone (and thats a lot of people) its not exactly a truism anymore to say The Camera Never Lies!! Mindful Manipulations is a new exhibit opening Aug 26 at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery that draws from the Gallery’s Thomas Bouckley Collection as well as its its permanent collection, the Whitby Archives, the Oshawa Community Museum archives and the Oshawa Public Libraries to showcase how photographs have been altered almost from the beginning of the medium. Retouching, multiple exposure, photomontage, overpainting are just a few of the techniques people have used to alter images either for aesthetic or deceptive purposes. U of T professor Deepa Kundar, of the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering will lecture on the exhibit and its subject Nov. 17 at the McLaughlin Library Auditorium. The lecture begins at 7 p.m. Mindful Manipulations: Selections from the Thomas Bouckley Collectioncontinues until Jan. 10 2016. The opening night reception is Oct. 2 2105.
