In one of the first interviews I had with the Hamilton-based, Oshawa-raised, Wayne Petti, he told me when Cuff The Duke started their intention was to marry the punk of Nirvana with the country of Johnny Cash to create a new sound. For most of Cuff's records the songs veered more towards the Cash side of things but with Petti's new project Grey Lands he is steering things back to the punkier side of the street.
"When I first started playing guitar all I was listening to was Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Pavement," says Petti, "I've always really liked the sound of those bands. In Cuff The Duke we touch on those influences but never went head first into those sounds and styles so to speak."
He says he wanted to take a break from the roots scene he has long been a part of and explore some other styles. The tracks on Grey Lands' Right Arm available on Paper Bag Records have been brewing for almost five years he said. He just had to wait and see where they took him.
"I wanted the songs to be melodic but also have the option of taking a complete left turn away from that at times. The rest of the record has a lot of moments like that," he says.
A video for False Alarm has been released. Listen for the left turns.
