HAERTS play some velvet afternoon vibes Sunday June 3 at Field Trip

Will McGuirk May 30, 2018

By Will McGuirk

Brooklyn by way of Munich winds through a lot of territory as does the music of Haerts, the German duo, who play Sunday at Field Trip 2018. They have scored some serious streaming cred with a track on the Netflix show '13 Reasons Why'. "Your Love" rides a Bauhaus beat, Springsteen narrative and Paul Simon Graceland groove and a Stevie Nix chorus, yip anyway, their latest "New Compassion" bumps up against The Lumineers and Nancy Sinatra/ Lee Hazelwood so you tell me what genre they are but its sure is intriguing. They've signed to Arts & Crafts by the by.

Field Trippers this weekend will get Dizzy, along with Metric, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Alvvays

Will McGuirk May 28, 2018

By Will McGuirk

Oshawa's courtiers of leafy court pop, Dizzy, bring their dreamy suburban sounds to the Field Trip Music and Arts Festival this weekend, June 2 and 3. The festival at Fort York & Garrison Common in Toronto also includes Metric running through all of their 2009 album, "Fantasies" plus Bahamas, Japandroids, Damien Jr. Gong Marley, the Yeah Yeahs Yeahs, Alvvays, Deer Tick, Partner and more.

Dizzy were most recently at the Great Escape Festival in Britain. Charlie Spencer of the band says it was quite the experience.

"Great Escape was beautiful, Brighton is a great town and the shows were rammed," he says.

The band of three brothers (Alex, Mack and Charlie) and singer Katie Munshaw have also announced they have signed a couple of deals around the globe. They are signed to Royal Mountain in Canada.

"We've signed a deal with Communion for records and publishing for the UK and Europe. We've also signed to a label called Inertia in Australia. It means good things for the band, lots more people working to help us push the singles/videos, and the record due out by the end of summer," he says.

They will be playing the end of summer Royal Mountain at Raspberry Festival taking place Sep 2 at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Hamilton but before that trip its Field Trip time.

Will McGuirk May 19, 2018

By Will McGuirk

River & Sky Music and Camping Festival is celebrating its tenth anniversary with a stylish line-up of alumni and fresh folks. Those already announced for the four-day bash in Field, On (July 19-22) include Chad VanGaalen, Born Ruffians, The Pack AD and Land of Talk.

But there's more coming including Julie Doiron, Dan Romana, Laura Savage, WHOOP-Szo, Walrus and Bernice. PLUS one of our faves we first met at River 'n Sky, the legendary Dany Laj & The Looks.

There are two stages, Main and Beach with an interactive art walk connecting the two. There are also late-night DJs; among them Coy Haste aka Brad Weber of Caribou.

There are of course local food and arts vendors but River & Sky has river swimming and saunas, what!!. Having gone several times I fully endorse y'all taking the trip north for this, #SeeTheNorth

I had an email interview with R&S festival director Peter Zwarich, read it here.

Wintersleep headlines Sandbanks Music Festival Sep 15

Will McGuirk May 18, 2018

By Will McGuirk

I keep meaning to get out to Prince Edward County for the Sandbanks festival, maybe this will be the year. Wintersleep is enough of a draw for me, actually a day in the County is enough of a draw for me but a day with Wintersleep in the County, well, whats not to love?

This is the fifth year for the festival and along with Wintersleep, the line-up so far includes Gianna Lauren, Listen Up Kid, Ella Jade, Jeremy Kelly and Triples. More will be announced later. Tickets are $30 and of course as the County is also one foodie dreamscape there are local food trucks and local beverages.

Mariposa Festival releases daily schedule; 2018 lineup includes Nick Lowe, Buffy, Alan Doyle and Joel & Bill Plaskett

Will McGuirk May 9, 2018

By Will McGuirk

The Grand Dame of Festivals, she's been dancing since 1961, has one fine weekend all scheduled up for 2018. Mariposa Festival, which takes place July 6, 7, 8 in Tudhope Park in Orillia, ON., has announced its daily headliners with Friday featuring Valdy and Walk Off The Earth and Sunday peaking with Bahamas and Buffy Sainte-Marie but for me its Saturday that is must do. Alan Doyle of Great Big Sea, Joel Plaskett and his pops Bill and the superb Lisa LeBlanc are all scheduled to play so its a guaranteed kitchen party but Mariposa goes even deeper bringing in Nick Lowe and Los Straitjackets.

There are over 50 acts performing over several stages including Fred Eaglesmith and the Good Lovlies, Tami Neilson, Iskwe and Cecile Doo-Kindue. There are workshops, food vendors, an art alley, beer tent and one of the finest locations on the shores of Lake Couchiching.

Crown Lands, Mappe Off and Annie Sumi announced for Hillside, runs July 13-15 2018

Will McGuirk April 17, 2018

By Will McGuirk

Hillside 2018 is going to be a lot of fun. The annual music fest in Guelph always is really but with three of my fave Durham Region acts on the bill its going to be even more so. All three, Crown Lands, Mappe Of and Annie Sumi are doing fine work, building and garnering even more attention as the days go by.

Crown Lands retro-psyche rawk, Mappe Of's prog-folk ramblings and Sumi's darling meditations are just a few of the great acts coming outta the Region, count Dizzy, Chastity, West Hammock, Matlock Expressway, Rory Taillon among those you will see and hear more of at festivals this year.

Its a good time in the D-Rawk however its odd I am also engaged in a FB conversation about how the Oshawa city staff are failing local acts by not booking them for their city-run events. Lot of work to do yet I guess but at least other communities are digging our kats and giving them a stage.

Hillside announced its full line up for its stages today and as per usual its as much on the edge as it ever was.  Destroyer!! Yes!! Adrian Underhill, Chad Van Gaalen, U.S. Girls, Partner, Walrus and Cancon classy folk trio Tamarack. Too many for me to bother typing but reality is Hillside is one of the highlights of the summer and more so when spent seeing pals get the accolades so justly deserved. Get your tickets, get your camping sites, get on it.

Born Ruffians, Chad VanGaalen help celebrate ten years of River & Sky

Will McGuirk April 9, 2018

Located at Fishers’ Paradise in Field, ON, north of West Nipissing, River & Sky is a gem of the North. The festival is celebrating its ten year anniversary Thursday July 19 to Sunday July 22 this year.

The line-up has always featured an adventurous mix of sounds from Canada’s indie scene along with locals from towns along the Trans-Canada highway as it runs from North Bay into Manitoba. This year is no different with R&S alumni Chad VanGaalen, Born Ruffians and Shred Kelly returning to celebrate the anniversary. The festival’s alumni also includes The Sadies, Timber Timbre, METZ, Hayden, Black Mountain and Antibalas among others. Operators, Land of Talk, and The Pack AD will also play this tenth incarnation of the fest.

Ten years was not on the minds of the festival’s founders when they were first planning a home grown community gathering. Festival Director Peter Zwarich says its been just one year at a time for them.

“We are very happy that we have made it to ten years but getting there never really came to mind, it has always been a year-to-year existence with a wait-and-see-how-it-goes approach,” he says.

Even taking it one year at a time it hasn’t been easy. The newness of the festival, its location and its smallness were obstacles to overcome and there are always financial pressures too. Festivals are under pressure financially and

“Early on, I think that not having street cred was an obstacle at times in being able to attract key artists.  That has changed over time as more artists have played R&S and they are able to speak to the experience with their peers,” says Zwarich.

“Money is always an obstacle. Without the help of key funders and partners R&S would not exist - they have been a key resource for both guidance and cashflow.  We also belong to local, regional and provincial music/ arts & sustainability communities and their knowledge and energy and love has definitely propped R&S up over the years. The goodwill of many good people has been instilled into R&S and so many other festivals. Being open to a collective experience and allowing people to join in and contribute has often been our saving grace to overcoming obstacles - many obstacles,” he says.

But ten years on, obstacles being met and overcome, and bands ready and willing to make a stop, the good folks of River & Sky have proved themselves. They are now part of the community driven festival circuit, on par with some seasoned festivals as Mariposa, River Fest and Hillside. With the decade Zwarich as advice for any community looking to start their own festival.

“Do it,” he says, “figure it out and do it. Festivals, as a celebration of community, help to define and strengthen our overall social identity.  They act as a focal point for collective energy and somehow you end up with something definitive and special that is somehow greater than just the sum of its parts. When people work together and come together at festivals we are reminded of what being humans can really be about.”

New festival, Springtide, will flood the streets of Uxbridge with music

Will McGuirk March 26, 2018

By Will McGuirk

Great Lake Swimmers will float into Uxbridge on the Springtide, a new Canadian music festival set to fill the streets and venues of the downtown Friday Apr 20 and Saturday Apr 21 2018. Also on the line-up; Charles Spearin, Julian Taylor, Lindy Vopnfjord as well as Rory Taillon, Sarah Fazackerly, Orangabang, Kingdom of BIrds and many more.

We asked co-founder Joanne Richter about the fest.

SC: What was the inspiration for Springtide?

A group of us attended Wintersong Festival in Stouffville in January, some as performers and volunteers and others just as music lovers. We loved its tight-knit community feel, the eclectic mix of venues and quality of the music. We all came together about a day later and just said, “We need to do this in Uxbridge!” It just felt like a need we had to fill. We have an incredible music community here and so much energy to share. Before we knew it, we were starting up a non-profit organization and hitting the ground running. One of our group was pretty tight with Kevin Ker and Heather Cook Scala at Epidemic Music Group, who organized Wintersong, and we started talking to them right away. They’ve offered their guidance as we got our festival off the ground and will be part of our run-of-show team on the day of.

SC: Great line-up - how did you settle on the line-up?

We had an open call for artists, and because so many of our organizing team are musicians with great connections, the word went out pretty far and wide. Settling on the line-up is the hard part, cause we had well over 100 submissions from some really fantastic talent. There was voting from all the committee members, and then fine tuning to ensure we had a good balance of musical styles, equal representation of male and female artists, etc. Two of our committee are also curating special Saturday stages: we have a Youth Stage featuring a lineup of super talented young bands like Kingdom of Birds and Moscow Apartment, and a Workshop Stage with 4 themed workshops featuring spectacular artists like Charles Spearin. We still have lots of announcements to come.

SC: What venues are you using and how are you curating each stage?

There are six gated venues: Wixan’s Bridge Restaurant, Urban Pantry Restaurant, Tin Mill Restaurant, Corner House Pub & Grill, Blue Heron Studio and The Second Wedge Brewing Company (indoors on the Friday; outdoor stage on the Saturday).

SC: We also have two ungated venues: Col. McGrady’s Pub & Grill, Uxbridge Smokehouse

And acoustic pop-ups are happening in these seven venues: Nexus Coffee, Main Street Realty, Wine Kitz, Laura’s Casual Kitchen, The Passionate Cook’s Bistro, Keith’s Flower Shop and Blue Heron Books.

The gated venues will feature our heavy hitters and full bands; our festival headliner, Great Lake Swimmers, will be playing the outdoor stage on the Saturday evening. We have some great solo/duo stuff happening at the ungated venues, including an Open Mic feature. Our acoustic pop-ups are just as they sound, simpler presentation and briefer sets but some really great names.

Festival wristbands are on sale now at springtide.tickits.ca (with early-bird pricing till April 2); a wristband will get you free entry to any of the gated venues. It’s all first come, first served, but the idea is that if one venue fills up we have all sorts of other options up and down the street. The whole festival takes place in downtown Uxbridge, along Brock Street and some of the side streets. . . it’s just a nice springtime stroll.

SC: Is it important to you to have a certain ratio of local acts?

Yes! We’re committed to showcasing Uxbridge talent to both our own community and people visiting town for the festival, so we’ve made sure to target fifty per cent artists from Uxbridge or with an Uxbridge connection. Come out to Springtide and prepare to be blown away!
