Albums by Black Mountain, Basia Bulat, Carley Rae Jepsen, Kaytranada, Jessy Lanza, Andy Shauf, U.S. Girls, Grimes, White Lungs and PUP are up for the 2016 Polaris Music Prize. The award will be handed out Monday Sept 19 at a gala held at the Carlu in Toronto. Some of the nominees will be performing.
A sequestered jury will convene on the night, deliberate during the show and announce their agreed upon winner at show end. Previous winners include Buffy Sainte-Marie, A Tribe Called Red, Tanya Tagaq, Arcade Fire, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Fucked Up, Karkwa, Patrick Watson, Feist, Caribou and Final Fantasy.
While First Nation artist have been well represented the diversity of winning voices has yet to extend to artists of colour, can you say #PolarisSoWhite. Its 2016, time for some Rap/HipHop to take home the gold, I'll go out on a limb and throw my vote for the 99.9% into the hat.
